Breast Reconstruction

Plastic surgery can replace tissue and shape following a mastectomy. Breast reconstruction is achieved with prosthesis and various ‘flaps’ where skin and muscle is used to make a new breast. The nipple is reconstructed 6 – 12 weeks later using the skin of the newly created breast. A few weeks later the new nipple and areola is tattooed to match the opposite breast.

The Procedure

  • Operation: 2 – 3 hours
  • General anaesthetic
  • 2 – 3 nights hospital stay

Recovery

  • 1 – 2 weeks before driving
  • 2 weeks rest before work
  • 6 weeks before any exercise
