What is Endermologie®?

Endermologie® is an effective, non-invasive technique for controlling cellulite and re-contouring the body. It was developed in France eighteen years ago by LPG Systems.

When Louis Paul Guitay, the founder of LPG Systems, was badly injured in a car accident, he developed these unique massage machines to treat the resulting scar tissue. It was later found that the machine was very effective in the treatment of cellulite and the technique became known as Endermologie®, meaning ‘treatment through the skin’. Endermologie® manipulates the skin and underlying tissues by a combination of rolling and aspiration.

This process restructures the skin’s connective tissue, stimulates blood and lymph circulation and facilitates the elimination of toxins. By triggering the body’s normal process for excess fat elimination, Endermologie® extensively tones and firms, resulting in smooth skin and a slimmer, more refined figure.

Endermologie® is carried out by trained therapists, using one our three machines. We use the Cellu M6® KeymoduleTM, which is a computerised machine, and the most advanced presently available.

In the interests of hygiene, the treatment heads are cleaned with an alcohol-based antiseptic solution after each treatment.

The Endermologie® Lifestyle

A four-point plan

At the Endermologie® Centre we advocate the Four Point Plan as we have proved that this holistic approach does give the best results.

We stress the importance of the following:

Endermologie® treatments
Water consumption
Healthy diet
Regular exercise

Endermologie® Treatments

You will be advised at your consultation to have either one or two treatments per week, depending your body type and possible weight-loss goals. More than two treatments per week will not bring faster results.

The minimum number of treatments you will need to see results is fourteen; however most patients need at least twenty treatments for optimum results.

When booking your treatments, it is advisable to schedule at least two days in between sessions, to give the lymphatic system as much time as possible to get rid of toxins.

Each session takes 35 minutes, but patients are booked every hour, to ensure that there is enough time for changing into the Bodywear®, taking of photographs and measurements, weighing and general administration.

Water Consumption

The importance of drinking at least two litres of fresh, filtered water per 24 hours cannot be stressed enough! Endermologie® stimulates the lymphatic system to flush away harmful toxins. Your lymphatic system need s plenty of water to do this. You will see a huge improvement in the results you can expect from Endermologie®, if you give the body what it needs to function at its peak. Try to spread your water intake over the whole day and evening. Drinking large quantities of water at once will only make you feel ill! Remember, the two litres does not include tea, sift drinks and other fluids…only count the glasses of filtered water you consume!

Healthy Diet

We suggest that you embark on healthy eating plan, not a ‘diet’ as such. Remember that this is the lifestyle you want to be following for the rest of you life, not just during your initial Endermologie® course. If you have weight to lose, there are many options open to you. Organizations such as Weight Watchers and Weigh Less can suggest very good eating plans, as can dieticians. The Endermologie® machine is not a ‘slimming machine’, although it does re-contour the body.

Crash dieting and other quick-loss programs can offer short-term weight-loss, but do have the unfortunate result of decreasing your metabolic rate, resulting in rapid weight gain when a normal eating pattern is resumed.

We advise that you avoid refined foods, saturated fats, coffee and alcohol. Increase your intake of unrefined foods, fruit and vegetables.

Wendy does have a range of the AIM food supplements available for purchase. Ask her if you would like more information on this.

Regular Exercise

Exercise is an integral part of the Endermologie® lifestyle. You should try to exercise at least 3 times per week, for at least 45 minutes per session. If you want to lose weight by exercising, you must aim to maintain your heart rate at 70% of your maximum heart rate capacity during exercise. To work out your maximum heart rate, subtract your age from 220 beats per minute.

i.e. MHR = 220bpm – your age.
Now calculate 70% of that figure and you will find the pulse rate you should aim for to begin ‘fat burning’ during exercise.

Bear in mind that there are certain types of exercise that are more beneficial than other types. Aim for exercise that is consistent, such as aerobics and walking/jogging, rather than exercise that takes place in ‘spurts’, such as squash and tennis.

Look for an exercise plan that you will want to do consistently on a long-term basis. There are many such programs to choose from, such as Run/Walk for Life, Optifit etc.

Does it really work? Can you show me results?

It certainly does! There have been scientific studies done in France and the USA, documenting good results. We can show you our results file as well as the file of the results from France. We can also put you in touch with some of our patients who will be able to vouch for Endermologie®.

How long does a treatment session last?

Each treatment takes 35 minutes, but we only book one patient per hour, as you will need time to change, to be weighed and for us to answer any questions you might have.

Are the treatments painful?

No, in fact, they are deeply relaxing. As patients are all different, with different discomfort thresholds, the machines can be set to suit each patient. Your therapist will ask you to report any discomfort during the treatment. The aspiration setting used will depend on you, the suppleness of your skin and the amount of cellulite present.

You might find that you do have more discomfort in the areas where more cellulite is present. In that case, your therapist will adjust the setting of the machine. Aspiration levels vary between 3 and 6. You will not enhance your results by having treatments on a higher aspiration than is comfortable for you. It is not a case of ‘no pain, no gain’!

How will I feel afterwards?

Most patients enjoy the treatment and report a feeling of relaxation and well being afterwards. Some patients report an increase in energy during their Endermologie® course. You might also notice an increase in your urine production, so might have to go to the toilet more often.

When can I expect to start seeing results?

You can expect to start seeing or feeling a change after 6 to 7 sessions. Your clothes might begin to feel looser and you skin softer and of a better colour. Toning and shaping will really begin to show after 10 treatments. Treatments with the KeymoduleTM do tend to show results quicker.

Should my cellulite be looking worse after 5 to 7 treatments?

Certain patients do go through a ‘softening’ stage, when the cellulite appears to look worse. This shows that the hard, swollen, cellulite tissue is beginning to respond to the treatment. As lymph drainage improves and the engorged fat cells begin to shrink, the area softens and becomes more jellylike. As you reach your 10th treatment, the cellulite continues to reduce and the collagen and elastin build-up begins to tone the skin, giving rise to a younger, smoother appearance. So, don’t be discouraged by the ‘softening’ stage; it is quite normal and expected!

Will Endermologie® help the appearance of stretch marks and 'spider veins'?

Quite possible. We do have documented cases in which stretch marks and spider veins have improved tremendously in appearance. However, we cannot treat over the area of a varicose vein, as this could cause the vein to slacken even further.

I have loose, sagging skin. Will Endermologie® help this?

During your consultation, we will examine your skin and give you an indication as to whether we feel that you can be helped. In certain cases, usually where there has been a great deal of weight lost, there is a large amount of loose skin, which will be difficult to treat. In this case, we will suggest alternative therapies. The usual sagging effect of aging skin responds well to Endermologie®.

Why do I have to wear LPG Bodywear®? Can I not just wear large pantyhose?

Bodywear® is specially designed to cover all the areas we want to treat. As Endermologie® stimulates the lymphatic system of the entire body, we treat all areas during each session. This includes the back and arms, which are not covered by ordinary pantyhose. With Bodywear®, the treatment head glides smoothly over the skin, enabling the therapist to carry out the various manoeuvres with ease.

Why do you treat my whole body? Why not just the areas of cellulite?

Endermologie® act on the hypodermic fat layer cell layer, stimulating the lymphatic vessels therein and increasing the metabolic rate of the fat cells by bringing extra blood and oxygen to the area. As the body is a single organism, we cannot simply treat only one area, unblocking the drainage of that area, while ignoring adjacent blocked areas.

As we want the skin tone to improve over the whole body, we must massage and stretch those connective tissue cells all over. We do, however, concentrate on your problem areas, as determined during your consultation.

How long do the results last?

The results last from several months to a few years, depending on age, lifestyle and hormonal changes you might experience. As this is a form of ‘skin gymnastics’, we recommend once-a-month sessions to maintain your results. In fact, it has been shown that patients who continue to have regular treatments not only maintain their results, but also continue to improve over the years!

Does this treatment work on men?

Yes, it does. Although men seldom have cellulite as such, Endermologie® can reduce bulky areas, such as ‘love-handles’ and loose breast tissue.

What is he difference between Endermologie® and liposuction? Can Endermologie® be used instead of liposuction?

Endermologie®, unlike liposuction, does not involve breaking through the skin in any way. Some patients decide to have Endermologie® in preference to liposuction. Some patients choose to have both Endermologie® treatments and liposuction to solve their problem. Endermologie® is being used successfully in conjunction with liposuction, to enhance the results and to speed up the recovery process.

Are there any side effects?

In the occasional patient, minor temporary bruising on more sensitive areas, such as the inner thigh, could occur.

What are the contraindications to receiving Endermologie® treatments?

In certain patients, Endermologie® is contraindicated.

These include the following conditions:

  • Widespread skin conditions
  • Any form of cancer (as cancer spreads via the lymphatic system and Endermologie® stimulates the lymphatic system). Patients must have been clear of cancer for five years before being accepted for treatment.
  • Anti-coagulant therapy
  • A history of blood clots or phlebitis
  • Pregnancy

What is the difference between the KeymoduleTM and the other two machines?

The treatment manoeuvres used with KeymoduleTM are different and patients tend to shoe results sooner. However, the treatments are more expensive, so the choice is really yours. However, once you have chosen a machine, you must have all your treatments on that machine.

Why is Endermogym® so important?

Endermogym® refers to a series of active muscle contractions on the part of the patient, which isolate the muscles from the fat cell layer. This allows the therapist to work intensively on the fat layer, accelerating the results obtained. Endermogym® should be part of every Endermologie® session.
